Volume 7, Issue 15, 2004-08-30 Zions Bancorporation Honored At NASDAQ Stock Market Open
|
Harris H. Simmons, chairman and chief executive officer of Zions Bancorporation opened the NASDAQ market August 12, marking 20 years since Zions was listed on The NASDAQ National Market. More importantly, Zions celebrates 131 years of serving clients in the Intermountain West.
The Market Open began with an introduction of Zions Bancorporation by Robert Greifeld, president and chief executive officer of The NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc. Greifeld recounted some of the history of the company, including the founding of Zions Savings Bank in 1873 by Brigham Young. He also noted that Zions Bancorporation embarked on a growth path that has made Zions one of the 40 largest banking companies in America.
After Greifeld's introduction Simmons spoke, leading up to the opening of the market at 9:30 a.m. EDT. "We appreciate the relationship we have with NASDAQ, and appreciate the technology of NASDAQ that helps facilitate our growth and that of our customers," Simmons said.
Following the Market Open, Sasha Salama interviewed Simmons, asking how the Federal Reserve's recent decision to raise the interest rate affects Zions Bancorporation's bottom line.
"We tend to be naturally what we call very 'asset sensitive,' which means that we tend to be doing very, very well in rising rate environments, and suffer when rates come down," Simmons said. "We try to manage that to take out a lot of the volatility. Even so, we like to be slightly asset sensitive, which would actually help us a little bit when rates rise. We believe that is where we are today. There is a lot of art and science to it, but the rising rate environment, modestly rising rates, we think shouldn't be detrimental and should be helpful," Simmons said.
Several other members of Zions Bancorporation executive management attended the ceremony including Doyle Arnold, executive vice president and chief financial officer; David Hemingway, executive vice president and chief investment officer; and Clark Hinckley, senior vice president, investor relations and communications.

7(a) loans are the most basic and most used type loan of SBA's business loan programs. Its name comes from section 7(a) of the Small Business Act, which authorizes the Agency to provide business loans to American small businesses. The SBA 7(a) loan program offers up to 25-year, fully amortized loans that result in lower monthly payments for the borrower. Proceeds from the 7(a) program may be used for most business purposes, including the purchase of real estate to house the business operations; construction, renovation or leasehold improvements; acquisition of furniture, fixtures, machinery, and equipment; purchase of inventory; and, working capital.
Americas 23 million small businesses employ more than 50 percent of the private workforce, account for more than half of the nations private sector output, and are the principal source of new jobs in the U.S. economy. In Utah, approximately 97 percent of businesses qualify as small businesses (businesses with fewer than 500 workers).
The U.S. Small Business Administration, established in 1953, provides financial, technical and management assistance to help Americans start, run, and grow their businesses. The SBA's current business loan portfolio of roughly 219,000 loans worth more than $45 billion makes it the largest single financial backer of U.S. businesses in the nation. Volume 7, Issue 10, 2004-05-24 Zions Bank Announces Program To Help Small Business Customers Invest Overseas
|
Zions Bank recently entered a cooperative agreement with Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and Interlink Capital Strategies to help its small business customers make investments in emerging markets. The announcement was made at Zions Bank's annual International Trade and Business Conference in Salt Lake City.
Through the agreement, Interlink will prepare applications for OPIC financing by Zions' small business customers, in return for a small packaging fee. Interlink's involvement will ease the application process and thereby encourage investment overseas by small businesses from the western part of the United States, represented by Zions' customers.
"As our market's top SBA lender, Zions Bank is pleased to partner with OPIC to bring small businesses easy strategies for investing in the worldwide marketplace," said Scott Anderson, Zions Bank president and CEO. "We are committed to helping our business clients find ways to expand their companies beyond traditional domestic borders."
Added OPIC president and CEO Dr. Peter Watson, "OPIC's partnership with Zions Bank and Interlink will open new opportunities for U.S. small businesses from the western part of the country to invest in dynamic markets overseas. Interlink's involvement will result in a valuable 'force multiplier' effect, extending OPIC's outreach to small businesses in the American west. Given the strong records of both Zions Bank and Interlink, we at OPIC expect this partnership to yield significant benefits to both U.S. small businesses and the developing nations where they invest."
Dr. Watson noted that the partnership represented the latest initiative in OPIC's efforts to encourage investment overseas by U.S. small businesses. OPIC established a Small Business Center and entered into a special initiative with the U.S. Small Business Administration in 2002, and created a Small and Medium Enterprise Finance Department last year. OPIC supported 42 small business projects with $479 million in 2003, compared to $269 million for 31 projects in 2002.
Interlink Capital Strategies specializes in financing transactions and projects in emerging markets using government programs. Because financial markets are typically unable to support sales and direct foreign investment in emerging markets without government involvement, Interlink Capital Strategies provides critical financial advisory services to mobilize financing in regions outside Western Europe and North America. The type of financial support includes: business development seed money, export working capital, vendor financing, direct foreign investment support, insurance, bonding and guarantees.
OPIC was established as an agency of the U.S. government in 1971. It helps U.S. businesses invest overseas, fosters economic development in new and emerging markets, complements the private sector in managing risks associated with foreign direct investment, and supports U.S. foreign policy. Because OPIC charges market-based fees for its products, it operates on a self-sustaining basis at no net cost to taxpayers.
OPIC's political risk insurance and financing help U.S. businesses of all sizes invest in more than 150 emerging markets and developing nations worldwide. Over the agency's 32-year history, OPIC has supported $150 billion worth of investments that have helped developing countries to generate more than 690,000 host-country jobs. OPIC projects have also generated $66 billion in U.S. exports and created more than 257,000 American jobs.

Volume 8, Issue 6, 2005-03-28 Zions Bank President & CEO Named SBA's "Financial Services Champion of the Year"
|
Zions Bank President and Chief Executive Officer A. Scott Anderson has been named the U.S. Small Business Administration's Region VIII "Financial Services Champion of the Year." Region VIII encompasses Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Earlier this month, Anderson was named the Utah District Office's Financial Services Champion.
The Financial Services Champion of the Year award honors "individuals who assist small businesses through advocacy efforts to increase the usefulness and availability of accounting or financial services," according to the SBA. The award is given to an individual who has demonstrated leadership in small business financing; advocacy of changes in the financial services industry to assist small companies; encouragement of the flow of investment capital to small ventures; and active support for legislative or regulatory action designed to help small firms.
"Utah's small business community is fortunate to have a champion like Scott Anderson supporting the financial needs of entrepreneurs across the state. Last year alone, Zions Bank approved 667 SBA-backed loans to small business worth an amazing $48 million," said Elton W. Ringsak, SBA's Region VIII administrator based in Denver.
"Zions Bancorporation, the parent company of Zions Bank, is ranked second in the country in SBA 504 loans, and eighth in SBA 7(a) loans. Zions Bank continues to be at the forefront of economic development and outreach to small business in Salt Lake City and rural Utah. We at the SBA hope our relationship with Scott and Zions Bank continues to flourish."
Anderson joined Zions Bank in 1991 as the executive vice president of Retail Banking, responsible for the bank's consumer and small business banking activities in its branch network. He assumed current responsibilities as president and CEO in January 1998.
Under his leadership, Zions Bank has created programs to support and finance small business owners and has provided educational resources for entrepreneurs. Through his creation of the Women's Financial Group and his partnership as the founding sponsor of the Pete Suazo Small Business Center, Anderson has helped women and minority entrepreneurs develop their companies.
"I am honored and humbled to receive the SBA's Champion Award on behalf of Zions Bank, but the true 'champions' are the hard-working and visionary entrepreneurs who help build our economy and create jobs, said Anderson. |
For the fiscal year ended September 30, 2004, Zions First National Bank approved 667 U.S. Small Business Administration 7(a) loans in Utah, ranking Zions Bank as the state's top provider of SBA loans to small businesses. Zions' top ranking in Utah marks the eleventh consecutive year that the bank has ranked as the state's top SBA lender. The 667 loans approved by Zions Bank in Utah totaled approximately $47.9 million, and represent more than 37 percent of the 1,820 SBA-backed loans approved in Utah during fiscal year 2004.
"Zions Bank's consistent ranking as Utah's top SBA lender demonstrates our institution-wide commitment to supporting small businesses as they grow, expand and create jobs," said Scott Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Zions Bank. "Helping Utah's visionary entrepreneurs gain access to the capital they need is vital to Zions Bank, because small businesses play a fundamental role in our economy."
In addition to its ranking as an overall leader in SBA lending, Zions Bank also leads all other financial institutions in Utah in marketing SBA loans to women- and minority-owned businesses. During fiscal year 2004, nearly 30 percent (or 197) of the SBA loans approved by Zions Bank were to women and minorities. Zions Bank made 37 loans to minority-owned businesses, 95 loans to businesses owned 100 percent by women, and another 65 loans to businesses co-owned by women. Additionally, one-third (or 212) of the total SBA loans closed by Zions Bank in 2004 were made to rural businesses.
Beyond its ranking as top SBA lender in Utah, Zions Bank was also recognized as a Regional Outstanding Lender of the Year by the SBA at its annual expo last May.

Proceeds from the 7(a) program may be used for most business purposes, including the purchase of real estate to house the business operations; construction, renovation or leasehold improvements; acquisition of furniture, fixtures, machinery, and equipment; purchase of inventory; and, working capital.
America's 23 million small businesses employ more than 50 percent of the private workforce, account for more than half of the nation's private sector output, and are the principal source of new jobs in the U.S. economy.
Last year alone, the SBA backed more than $12.3 billion in loans to small businesses. More than $1 billion was made available for disaster loans and more than $40 billion in federal contracts were secured by small businesses with SBA's help.

It will provide multi-media business resources - including a computer lab for research and for writing business plans, a library of business startup guides, and other books and publications that offer advice, ideas, and information.

Volume 7, Issue 8, 2004-04-26 Zions Bank Tops Web Site Ranking
|
According to an Internet site study released this month by financial services consulting firm Speer & Associates, Inc., the Zions Bank Web site (www.zionsbank.com) ranks as the top bank Internet site among regional banks with assets of between $15 billion and $25 billion.
The S&A Internet Site Assessment Study is conducted twice a year, tracking the business development and transactional capabilities of retail Internet offerings by leading financial institutions in the Western Hemisphere. Speer & Associates' February 2004 study ranks 79 leading financial services companies, 50 from North America and 29 from Latin America. In the overall ranking of Western Hemisphere banks, Zions ranked seventh just after multi-regional and Canadian institutions. The Speer & Associates study notes that the playing field has narrowed among surveyed institutions "due to continuing consolidation in the industry and a narrowing of the segments reviewed." The February 2003 study examined 30 more Internet sites than this year's report. Fewer Internet sites translate into more customers seeking top-notch online financial services, according to Scott Anderson, Zions Bank president and CEO.
"Zions Bank is proud of the results of the Speer & Associates report, especially given the increasingly consolidated financial services environment. Our customers have come to rely on the convenience and flexibility of making online banking transactions, and our Internet site continues to evolve to meet their needs," said Anderson. "Zions Internet Banking complements our traditional branch banking channels, so that our customers have the convenience of accessing their funds, and information relating to those funds, wherever and whenever they like."
In the last year, Zions' Web site has added a new bank application interface and such transactional capabilities as online check image views and automated clearing house transfers to external institutions. In addition, Zions Bank customers who enroll in Zions Internet Banking are able to access account information, transfer funds, pay bills, schedule bill payments, open an online safe deposit box, and receive e-mail notifications regarding specific account information.
All visitors to the Zions Bank Web site can use free financial tools and calculators, get insurance quotes, and apply for insurance policies, consumer loans and credit cards from the convenience of their own home or office. Mortgage rate monitoring, mortgage loan tracking, online stock trading, and much more are also available.
Today, more than 174,000 Zions Bank customers (or approximately 40 percent of Zions' customer base) are enrolled in Zions Internet Banking. And more than 1 million online customer interactions are completed each month through Zions Internet Banking.
