Volume 8, Issue 3, 2005-02-14 Xetava Gardens Celebrates 5 Years
|
Xetava Gardens, the first retail shop to open in the pueblo style development of Kayenta in west Ivins will celebrate 5 years in business this month. Once a lone shop on the edge of St. George, Xetava Gardens has now become a travel destination. Opening its doors for the first time in February of 2000 many doubted whether the new coffee, books and gift shop touting Mother Earth, peace and love would succeed so far away from the main stream, but with more than half a million visitors later, talks of expansion into the Las Vegas market and a new desert village development inspired by Xetava in the works for the city of Ivins... Xetava Gardens' is indeed a confirmed success.
Daniel Pettegrew, the creator and owner of the shop hasn't been too surprised by it's popularity, "I knew that if I created Xetava from the heart instead of being focused mainly on making money or the latest trends, people would feel and see the difference and want to come here again and again inspired by the desert's healing power and beauty." Reaffirming his sentiments, a friend from Japan exclaimed shortly after seeing the shop for the first time, "You have created a shrine to Mother Earth!" And ever since then the masses have continued to make "pilgrimages" to what many call a "sanctuary in the desert."
Those auspicious beginnings back in early 2000 have now helped spawn a thriving art community in Kayenta, which has now expanded to include two galleries, a rare book store, a pottery school, a wind sculpture studio and a recently dedicated labyrinth. Pettegrew and Xetava Gardens also helped revive or launch three new festivals for Kayenta and Ivins, one of which helps raise money for The Xetava Desert Arboretum, a non-profit organization which Pettegrew helped create by building trails and a garden in his spare time intended to help educate the public on plant and animal life of the area.
"Xetava Gardens is all about Mother Earth and her deserts." says Pettegrew "Instead of trying to change the environment or "fix" it Xetava Gardens is a reflection and celebration of the land, its colors, textures and personality."
Xetava Gardens' Five Year Anniversary celebration will take place on Friday, February 18th from 10AM to 5PM in Kayenta. Owner Daniel Pettegrew will be joined by guests throughout the day including the Ivins City Mayor Darren Barney, Ivins City Manager Judy Gubler, Native American Queen & Princess Markuitta Thomas and Danae Deschine, best selling author Ivy Ruckman and Crystal Healer and Spiritualist Nancy Furst.
Local TV personality Ann Staples of KCSG-TV will co-host with Pettegrew on Tuesday, February 15th at Xetava Gardens and will air during the week prior to the anniversary celebration.
