Q1 Loss for Kodak Tops 350 Million!
Trend for Photo/Printing Industry Continues Decline

ROCHESTER, NY-Eastman Kodak's first quarter loss touched $353 million, with erosion for demand of digital and film-based products exacerbated by the global economic downturn. As a result, the company is suspending its quarterly dividend, reducing salaries of its top-tier executives and requiring U.S. employees to take an unpaid one-week leave.

Sales plummeted 29 percent to $1.48 billion, down from $2.09 billion a year ago. Kodak CEO Antonio Perez will take a 15 percent pay cut for the balance of 2009 from his annual base salary of roughly $1.1 million. His top executives will absorb a 10 percent cut....

Quarterly Investment in Utah Firms Surges

Driven by a hot technology sector, investments in Utah companies by venture capitalists surged to $78.4 million during the third quarter of this year, their highest level since 2005, says the Deseret Morning News.

The investment amount was a 48 percent increase over the same July-through-September period last year, when venture-capital investments were $53.1 million, according to the PricewaterhouseCoopers' MoneyTree Survey.

The numbers also show that the increase in venture-capital investment in Utah is becoming a trend, because the $78.4 million invested in the third quarter follows strong investments in previous two quarters this year. Nationwide, venture cap...

Quote from a recent meeting

"We are going to continue having these meetings, everyday, until I find out why no work is getting done".

Quote from the Boss... "I didn't say it was your fault. I said I was going to blame it on you."

A motivational sign at work: The beatings will continue until morale improves.

A direct quote from the Boss: "We passed over a lot of good people to get the ones we hired."

My Boss frequently gets lost in thought. That's because it's unfamiliar territory.

My Boss said to me “What you see as a glass ceiling, I see as a protective barrier.

My Boss needs a surge protector. That way his mouth would be buffered from surprise spikes in his brain.

I thought my Boss was an idiot, and quit, to work for myself. My new Boss is an idiot, too ... but at least I respect him.

He's given automobile accident victims new hope for recovery. He walks talks and performs rudimentary tasks, all without the benefit of a SPINE.

Some people climb the ladder of success. My Boss walked under it.

Quote from the Boss after overriding the decision of a task force he created to find a solution: “I'm sorry if I ever gave you the impression your input would have any effect on my decision for the outcome of this project!"

HR Manager to job candidate "I see you've had no computer training. Although that qualifies you for upper management, it means you're under-qualified for our entry level positions."

Quote from telephone inquiry "We're only hiring one summer intern this year and we won't start interviewing candidates for that position until the Boss' daughter finishes her summer classes.

Qwest Announces Redundant Network Will Light Up in March

Qwest held a press conference on Jan 10 on the campus of Dixie College to announce the expansion of their Fiber Optic Network in Southern Utah and an increase in their commitment to provide improved customer service. The announcement from Utah President Jerry Fenn detailed a second Fiber Optics connection that will originate in St. George and connect with the National Qwest Fiber Optic Network that runs along the major railroad and highway routes around the country.
This connection will not only bring redundancy to St. George and Washington County, but also to areas between Provo and St. George that are served by the Utah Fiber Network including Cedar City, Beaver, Richfield, and several communities along Highway 89.
This new network will have enough capacity (OC48) to maintain many services in the case of a break in the original Utah Fiber Network. Fenn outlined that 911, FAA, and critical government services will have priority and then business customers who request and pay for redundancy as part of their services. Other services including voice, fax, and Internet will then be routed as capacity allows. This is all being done to illustrate Qwest's commitment to providing “First Rate Services.”
Perhaps the most important aspect of the announcement is the timing. Qwest will be turning up the new path in the next several weeks for testing and plan to make services available in March. Much of the construction has already been completed in anticipation of offering such a service.
Recent changes in the Telecomm Laws by the FCC have relaxed rules concerning the interconnection of the Qwest National Network and the networks procured by the company when it merged with USWEST. Before the FCC changes, Qwest was not allowed to interconnect the two networks when they met at a customers data center!
Another major factor in the decision was the increase in requests Qwest has received from Businesses moving into the Washington County Area. The increase in requests helped build a business case that did not exist before.
Fenn also announced that Cynthia Holman-Schmidt has relocated to our area to exclusively help small business customers with their issues and provide service in person. She is currently in training in Minnesota but will be beginning her full service in our area about the same time as the redundancy. You may reach Cynthia at 229-8029.
