Labor Pain
Latest Employment Data Worsening

What few remaining doubts existed about the U.S. economy being in a protracted and painful recession fell by the wayside on Friday, November 7 with the release of the October employment report. Not only was the October employment data ugly, but downward revisions to August and September job data only added to the pain.

The U.S. economy lost an estimated 240,000 jobs in October, roughly one-third more than expected.  Adding insult to injury were revisions to estimated job losses of the two prior months, which now suggest an additional 179,000 people lost jobs during those months.

Completing the hat trick of ugly employment data was a sharp rise in the nation's unemploy...

Labor Shortage Drives Up Value of Top Talent

SALT LAKE CITY - Businesses need to think about employees as investments, rather than bottom-line expenses, say leaders in Utah's human resources industry. During a recent Utah Business roundtable discussion, the experts agreed that employee retention is vital in Utah's tight labor market.

"There's a lot of employers who still think it's the good old days of 2000 when there were 10 people standing in line for every job. Today, there are 10 jobs for every person," said Lynn Richardson, vice president of human resources for SOS Staffing. "That does drive salaries up."

"Everybody wants more money," said Dennis Johnson, president and CEO of Smith Johnson Group, an I...

Land Exchange Emphasizes Fair Land Valuation

Legislation to trade scenic school trust lands into the hands of the United States is now in both the United States Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. Utah Senators Robert Bennett and Orrin Hatch introduced the senate legislation Thursday, May 26, 2005. The same legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives a couple of weeks earlier by Reps. Chris Cannon, Jim Matheson and Bob Bishop.
The proposed exchange would swap more than 40,000 acres of school trust lands “some of the most spectacular in America” for about the same acreage of Bureau of Land Management lands that are more suitable for meeting the needs of the trust beneficiaries.
The school trust lands are managed by the State of Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration and are located along the Colorado River in Grand County and include portions of the Kokopelli and Slickrock bike trails, the upper portion of Castle Valley, Corona Arch, Morning Glory Arch, and lands adjacent to Dinosaur National Monument.
The trust would receive less-sensitive acreage * in the Uintah Basin and Green River areas * that can be managed for the benefit of Utah's public schools and for community economic development.
"One of the key features of this legislation is the way it provides for a fair, equal value exchange," says Trust Lands Director Kevin Carter. "This proposal calls for an independent third party appraiser to provide for an equal value exchange. The Trust Lands Administration has sold a number of properties within the Colorado River corridor over the years. All of these sales have been made competitively. The information from these sales should all be available for the appraiser to use regardless of who was the purchaser of the lands. To withhold information about any of these sales would be unfair to the school children who will receive the benefits from lands acquired in this exchange."
"The independent appraiser will also be instructed to consider whether any federal lands acquired by the state are currently under a federal mineral lease. Federal law requires that 50-percent of the funds made from leasing, rents and royalties on federal lands be distributed to the state where these activities occur. In Utah, this is a significant source of revenues to local counties. The proposed law will keep these revenue streams intact as the Trust Lands Administration assumes the revenue sharing obligations of the federal government. The value of any such lands will be proportionally adjusted," says Carter.
Mr. Carter adds, "This exchange benefits many people. The people of the United States gain public control of some spectacular natural features; local Utah governments maintain their mineral revenue sharing funds; and Utah's schoolchildren get lands that will help build their permanent school fund. Those of us at the Trust Lands Administration commend the entire Utah congressional delegation for moving this important legislation along.

Laugh Until You Drop Your ...
... Blood Sugar and Pressure - whether you are diabetic or not ... this is great advice for managing health

No kidding. Well, actually, lots of kidding around has great physical effects on the body. Humor's effects are likened to internal jogging. It is good medicine!

I can give you the medical facts about laughter elevating serum oxygen levels, which benefit the cardiovascular system, or that laughter stimulates the Immunoglobulin Assay (IgA), improving immune system function. But what I really want to highlight is how humor can change one's mind, attitude, and mood to concretely improve how you take care of your diabetes.

Diabetes is not funny. However, humor in our daily lives grants us many benefits. It has been indicated that preschool age children laugh 400 times a day and adults only 15 times each day. You can easily add humor to your coping skills and reduce your stress levels by consciously shifting the way you look at things. This shift in attitude will help remove the...

Lawmakers, Small-Business Leaders Meet In Cedar City for Discussion Of Issues Before Legislature

Members of NFIB/Utah - the state's largest small-business advocacy organization -- and invited speakers from the Utah House and Senate convened in Cedar City, Saturday, Feb. 21, to discuss legislative issues vital to the state's economy.
The main topics of discussion were changes to the state's workers' compensation fund, unemployment insurance, potential tax increases, measures to streamline the state sales tax, and Senate Bill 66, which would prohibit cities from using sales tax revenues to pay for bonds.
The meeting was hosted by the Cedar City Area Action Council of NFIB. Area Action Councils are part of a nationwide effort by NFIB to build grassroots networks of small-business owners for the purposes of affecting state and local legislation. Invited guests who have expressed an interest in coming included Senator Tom Hatch and State Representatives Bud Bowman and Michael Noel.
Small business, employers of nearly six of every 10 working Americans, has distinctly different difficulties than big business in remaining solvent. Small businesses pay much more per employee than big businesses in complying with the same regulations, and since more than 80 percent of small-business owners are single filers, personal income tax rates matter much more to them than do business tax rates.
With 600,000 throughout the U.S., including 3,500 in Utah, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is the largest small-business advocacy group in the nation. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1943, NFIB represents the consensus views of its members before legislative bodies in all 50 state capitals and in Washington, D.C. Leave Fireworks to the Professionals

Decades of accidents teach us that fireworks are dangerous. Over 12,000 fireworks-related injuries occur each year, resulting in approximately 2,400 eye injuries.
In an effort to reduce these preventable injuries, eye doctors across America are encouraging families to attend local public fireworks displays instead of using fireworks at home this Fourth of July. This recommendation is made as part of Fireworks Eye Safety Month sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Attending a public fireworks display on the Fourth is a safe way to honor our tradition of independence.
According to Dr. Snow of Dixie Eye Center, "One of the reasons fireworks injuries continue to occur is because people don't realize how dangerous these devices can be. As many as 400 Americans lose vision in one or both eyes due to fireworks injuries each year. The risk of losing one's eyesight is not worth watching fireworks explode in an uncontrolled setting."
Although illegal fireworks, bottle rockets and Roman candles account for the majority of injuries, seemingly harmless sparklers also cause numerous injuries each year. For children under the age of five, sparklers account for one third of all fireworks injuries. Fascinated by the bright sparks, children find these sticks of fire - burning as hot as 1,800 degrees, hot enough to melt gold - irresistible to touch.
"The safest and most spectacular way to view fireworks is through professionally conducted, community sponsored displays. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July holiday," says Ahee.
Following is a list of fireworks displays that will be conducted in our area:
St. George City - Sun Bowl, Saturday, July 3rd
Hurricane City - Ball Park, Saturday, July 3rd
Springdale - Near the Town Hall, Saturday, July 3rd
Cedar City - Near WalMart, Monday, July 5th
Washington City - Saturday, July 24th
Ivins - Near City Hall, Saturday, July 24th

Lee G. Caldwell Named New President Of Dixie State College

The State Board of Regents, Tuesday, selected Dr. Lee G. Caldwell as the 16th president of Dixie State College (DSC). Caldwell is currently the Executive Vice President of Academics for DSC and will assume his duties before fall semester. He succeeds President Robert D. Huddleston who will retire this summer and then return to teaching at DSC in 2006.
Caldwell's selection comes after an extensive national search that considered 74 candidates from 31 states. A search committee comprised of 25 individuals representing the Regents, DSC Trustees, faculty, staff, students, and community members selected four finalists who were announced last week.
"The role of Dixie State's president is not only critical to the mission of the college, but it is also important to the economic development of Washington County," said Board of Regents Chairman Nolan E. Karras. "Dr. Caldwell brings vision and leadership that will help meet the growing needs of students and the community."
In accepting this appointment Caldwell stated, "Dixie State has a long tradition of quality faculty and dedicated and talented students. In the year we have been here, we have enjoyed the vitality of the community and the cooperative spirit that continues to flourish in Southern Utah. Bonnie and I look forward to continued work with an inspiring faculty and staff, wonderful students and to building even stronger ties to the community and other educational institutions in the state."
Caldwell has extensive experience in both academic administration and the high-technology industry. Currently, he guides development and improvement of all academic programs and faculty resources at DSC. Prior to his current position, Caldwell served as the Associate Dean for Programs at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta from December 2002 to May 2004. He has also served as the Associate Vice President and Dean of Academic Computing at Indiana University in Bloomington and the Assistant Dean for the College of Business and Graduate School of Business at the University of Utah. He was an assistant professor of management and business for the University of Utah and Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

Legal Clinic Opens

ST. GEORGE — From the moment the Southern Utah Community Legal Center opened its doors in downtown St. George this month, callers flooded the phone lines to learn if they qualified for free legal help, according to the Deseret Morning News.

"It is going really well," said Adam Caldwell, president of the Southern Utah Bar Association, a main sponsor of the legal clinic that offers free advice to low-income and disabled individuals. "In the first three weeks that we've been open, we've been completely booked."

The legal center, located at 229 E. St. George Blvd., Suite 103, is staffed full time by a paralegal during regular business hours. Each Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., a group of attorneys from the Southern Utah Bar Association arrive at the center to provide free consultations and answers to legal questions.

"We've had a smattering of everything," said Monique Murray, who works as the center's paralegal. "People are really thrilled to have someone here in the community willing to help."

The center has, so far, helped individuals with questions regarding divorce, custody, bankruptcy, contracts, landlord/tenant disputes, domestic protective orders and disability issues, she said.

"People really want to learn how to advocate for themselves, and we can help point them in the right direction," said Murray. "We've had people as young as in their 20s to people in their 90s calling us for help, and everybody else in between."

Caldwell said the legal center serves as a unique clearinghouse, providing a wide variety of do-it-yourself information to walk-ins and valuable follow-up services for those with more complicated legal issues.

"We've got about 40 attorneys signed up to provide pro bono legal consultations, and I expect many more to sign on as we get past the beginning stages," he said.

Of the eight free consultations offered by attorneys at the center last Tuesday, Caldwell said all but one person could be helped by services offered through the site.

"There are many individuals who are discouraged from seeking needed legal assistance because they are fearful of the cost," said David Clove, chairman of the volunteer board of director for the center. "The goal of the Southern Utah Community Legal Center is to provide free legal services to people who cannot afford to see a lawyer. We hope accessibility to the justice system will be greatly enhanced by these efforts."

The legal center is a partnership between And Justice for All and the Southern Utah Bar Association. For more information or to make an appointment, call the Southern Utah Community Legal Center at 435-628-1604.

Legislator Pans Environmental Groups

Rep. Michael Noel, R-Kanab, didn't have high praise last week for environmental groups he said are blocking development of mineral, oil and gas development in Utah.

Noel told the Utah legislature's Public Utilities and Technology Interim Committee, which he co-chairs, that separate lawsuits are aimed at preventing the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management from allowing for test drilling for uranium in the Arizona strip near the Utah-Arizona border and for oil and gas development with what's known as the "Enduring Resources' Rock House" project.

The approved funding for a new Teacher Education building includes $10 million from state tax dollars plus a $1.5 million grant from the Emma Eccles Jones Foundation. It is planned to construct the new edifice adjacent to the 107-year-old Old Main building on upper campus‒the site of the origins of the Institution's Teacher Education legacy.
“To build a new Teacher Education building alongside the preservation of, quite literally, the old Teacher Education building,” President Bennion says, “makes a lot of sense and makes a meaningful statement. Re-establishing Teacher Education at the heart of the campus, as it has been at the heart of the Institution since Day One, 1897, will be a monumental reminder that Teacher Education has been and is central to SUU's mission.”
President Bennion acknowledges that “we would not be at this point in the project if it were not for the incredible support from many, including key legislators‒namely, Senators Tom Hatch and Bill Hickman, and Representative Bud Bowman; as well as SUU's Boards of Trustees and Fellows, the University administration, the very capable Plant Operations staff, the College of Education faculty and staff, the State Building Board, and the Regents.”
“And now”, reflectively, Bennion quotes the words of William Shakespeare‒“What's come to past is prologue. What is to come is in our hands.” (The Tempest, W. Shakespeare)

The Utah Legislature in its recently concluded session passed the state's largest ever tax cut - including several tax cuts specifically aimed at business - and passed the state's largest ever spending increase.

Legislature Mixes Tax Cuts with Tax Increases

Despite having the third largest revenue surplus in Utah history, legislators raised taxes during the 2008 General Session. Not only did they raise taxes, but they earmarked the revenue from that tax, instead of allowing all programs to compete equally for those funds.

The December revenue projections suggested the state would have approximately a $900 million surplus, which spurred discussions by House and Senate leadership in January of cutting taxes by between $60 million and $100 million.

Governor Huntsman didn’t include a tax cut in his budget, proposing instead to increase public education spending by 7 percent....

Lending in Decline?
Banks Under Increasing Pressure

America’s small and medium sized businesses have been the backbone for our past economic recoveries. However, local banks are currently under increased federal regulation and are becoming more hesitant to lend funds to these businesses. As credit markets begin to tighten even further this could potentially put a damper on your business’s growth and sustainability.

In an already challenging environment, tighter requirements make it more difficult for growing businesses to obtain needed financing. According to a Wall Street Journal article, community banks are requiring much more information about a business and its operations before it will be considered for financing. In addition to standard financial figures, a borrower is now required to report more thorough information, such as if one of their customers is in financial trouble. A bank may even request a tour of business facilities.

Today many businesses are turning to an...

Let's bring back integrity
Better Attitudes in the Workplace

Are you all as worried as I am that integrity and honesty are being sacrificed far to often? Sometimes integrity is sacrificed to stop a huge fight or confrontation, sometimes the end result of the lie seems to justify the "little indiscretion" along the way. It may be that to enhance the story being told a little embellishment would go a long way.

We watched while Senators, Treasury Secretaries and congressmen juggled with truth on national television. All this and more can lead to a cynical un-trusting focus. This hostile lens being used to view the world and our associates will likely eliminate some extremely healthy and needed relationship tools. Tools like...

Letter to a Bank
More Funny Business

Letter to a Bank - Below is an actual letter sent to a Bank in the United States. The Bank Manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in the New York Times.
Dear Sir
I am writing to thank you for bouncing my check with which I endeavored to pay my plumber last month. By my calculations some three nano-seconds must have elapsed between his presenting the check and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honor it. I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my entire salary, and arrangement which, I admit, has only been in place for eight years.
You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my acc...

Life is Like Training for a Triathlon
Better Attitudes in the Workplace

"Live your life on purpose!"
Matt Eschler

We have all wanted to start a new business, or even a hobby, only to find that schedules, people, and personal dilemmas just get in the way. Recently I have found myself looking for more.

Not more money, not more stuff. I want more time to do what I want and I want more energy and passion in my life! I considered a Harley Davidson but decided that this wouldn't serve my family very well right now.

I see others get a tattoo but decided that I couldn't put on what I can't take off. If I was my own client in the counseling office I would say I was in the middle of a ‘mid life crisis!’

Really, how many of you are searching for more. Maybe you want more time with your family, more passion in your marriage, more dependable income. Wouldn't it be great if there was a plan for you to find what you are seeking?

I took some lessons from the journey I have taken that can easily be applied to any circumstance. I decided to increase my passion for life, and clarity of mind by doing the swim, bike, and run sport called Triathlon.

I am a triathlete. I say this knowing that I have only finished two triathlons, but have learned enough from those two to consider myself on the right pathway to being a full fledged triathlete and near future Iron Man!

First, there are rules or principles of success that if you follow the principles you will be successful. I began triathlon by not owning the process. I was nervous about claiming the fact that I had registered in a triathlon.

Then because I did not fully own the process or the principles of doing this event I did not train correctly. Because I did not train correctly I showed up unprepared and did not do too well in my first event.

How many of you have decided to do something new and different with your life and put about fifty percent effort into it. How many times have you not been fully committed because you did not want to fail and have every one see you fail? How many of you break rules or commitments you made to yourself and others only to get hurt or hurt others in the process?

You can avoid these disasters by taking the following two steps. First, whenever you are going to make a change in your life take complete ownership for the change. Don't give a portion of effort by sneaking in the change around your other plans, if your going to do something create a plan that works and give it your one hundred percent.

Second, because step one requires you to create a strategy, you also need to schedule. Schedule out the time factors with those you work with as well as your spouse and kids. Make the plan fit what you have already happening and determine what needs to be canceled from your current schedule.

Make certain you are honest in this process and keep commitments with others as you make this change. Once you have managed the time and people in your life around accepting the change then you need to work on your mindset.

In business as in athletics, personal growth, time management, skill enhancement, and performance capacity are the life blood of success. With my next triathlon my stated objective is to mentally train toward achieving an open, consistent, and confident mindset and to be able to access that mindset at any time.

Most athletes spend a significant amount of time physically training with a negative mindset. So do a lot of businessmen and women. The brain acts like a servomechanism that then sets up your day to be like your mindset. If you want a great day at work or in your next triathlon you will need to see a great day in your mind.

Take a peek at the two charts below. The first illustrates annual budget deficits during most of the past 40 years in actual dollars. The second chart identifies annual budget deficits as they compared to the size of the enormous American economy, arguably the more important measure.

Both charts make it painfully clear that the new course of American government is indeed scary.

It wasn't all that long ago that investors and the media complained of deficits run by the previous Administration, following four years of actual budget surpluses late in the Clinton era (kind of hard to believe now). Concerns at that time centered around the irresponsibil...

Liquor Store Opening Likely Delayed

ST. GEORGE - Construction of a new state liquor store in St. George has slowed while construction crews blast through solid bedrock.

I have spent most of my life planning future conquests and setting up goals and objectives for success. I have used history as a method of deciding what worked and what didn't. It wasn't until recently that I have really taken notice of that point in time right in front of me. Now.

I read books about relaxation and was told that living in the now and enjoying the mome...

Livestock Owners Encouraged To Join NAIS

Utah livestock owners are encouraged to help protect animal health by registering their premises as part of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). The voluntary program is needed to help protect American animal agriculture from the intentional or accidental introduction of a foreign or domestic disease.
“Utah is joining numerous states across the country in the creation of an important tracking system that can speed up the identification and control of any serious animal disease in our state,” said Dr. Michael R. Marshall, State Veterinarian. “I encourage owners of cattle, sheep, swine, and other livestock to fill out the Premises Registration Form that is now available and return it to our office,” he added.
Dr. Marshall emphasizes that the program will be administered by the same Utah Animal Industry employees that livestock owners have come to know and trust, and that no personal or financial information will be gathered in the Premises Identification process.
Premises Registration Forms are available at the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) (801) 538-7166 or on the Internet at: www.ag.utah.gov.

Local Inventor Patents the “Selective Sampling Receiver”

Weber Technologies Inc. has recently introduced a new-patented technology that can increase the usefulness of the electromagnetic spectrum. What does this mean for you? Faster wireless communications and more accurate and robust defense system, to name just a few.
This technology was invented by Daniel Weber (Southwest Utah) and is being researched by Utah State University's assistant professor Michael Tompkins who is the principal investigator. Dr. Tompkins is simulating its performance and including the effects with real-world hardware implementation in his models.
Tompkins has said, "It's an important breakthrough. But the simplicity of the hardware is fantastic." So how does it work?

Understanding the technology
Let's use an example. Visualize if you will a grandfather clock. The swinging pendulum has thousands of times more energy than the hands of the clock. By setting up a high-speed camera to take a series of pictures at the time that the swinging pendulum appears to be at rest (vertically centered).
The pendulum appears to be stationary; the hands of the clock still move and the resulting series of pictures shows a stationary pendulum with only the hands of the clock moving. In reality, the clock's pendulum had thousands of times the energy of the hands but after the trick photography, the hands of the clock appear to have all of the energy.
Similarly, as an interfering signal is received its wave also passes through its place of rest or minimum energy points twice a cycle, just as did the pendulum. By synchronizing off an interfering signal's minimum energy points and keying the sampler, signals can be seen that would be otherwise hidden by the stronger interfering signal.
This is how this new technology can see twice as much data over the same received radio wave. Synchronization off of either signal can virtually eliminate an interfering signal that is carrying someone else's data and still reconstruct the desired signal carrying your data.

Seeing through many sources of interference
As two sine waves are added, they create a new sine wave that is different in phase and amplitude then that of the original sine waves. It is believed but not yet proven, that Webber's technology will allow treatment of all interfering sources of energy as a single composite sum of the different sources and mitigate their impact with low cost and low complexity circuits.

Applying the technology
This technique can be used with radio waves or sound waves. With current technology, only the strongest of the energy sources at any one frequency in an antenna's field of view can be seen. An example would be like trying to listen to an individual whispering in a noisy room. With this technique we can eliminate the interfering noise while preserving the intelligences offered by the person whispering.

What does this mean?
This means higher resolution imaging for the medical industry in such equipment as ultrasound since now it is possible to see many things where before only one could be seen. In avionics it can make an airport approach during severe weather resemble that of a video game and would be more robust to the effects of interference and jamming. Similar systems can be used in the automotive industry such as collision-avoidance radar.
In defense systems, better defense of our nation's coastline could be achieved since noise sources can be mitigated while searching for hostile submarines. There would be better air defenses since radar systems will be able to deal with countermeasures that can't be dealt with today. More accurate and reliable delivery of munitions is also possible since many forms of electronic counter-measures (jamming done by our adversary) can be mitigated.
However, the most dramatic impact for most of us is in the field of communications where higher data rates over wireless networks are made possible since more transmitters can use the same frequency at the same time and transmit different data.
This technology can help reduce the effects of the so-called co-channel interference problem (more than one user on a frequency at one time). To help illustrate the financial impact, consider the number of frequencies managed by the Federal Government through the FCC and that of one small block (called the PCS band), just a sliver of frequencies called Section C was auctioned off across the United States raising 10 billon dollars.
The Selective Sampling Receiver's simulations show the potential of doubling the usefulness of the potentially all of the electromagnetic spectrum not just a small sliver. Much greater densities are possible with this new technology.

According to author Joseph Friedrichs, "The southeastern corner of Utah has one of the state's fastest growing populations. With the surge of people to the area, one might assume bars are popping up on every street corner in town. They aren't.

"The One & Only Watering Hole is essentially just that in St. George. It's a beer-only operation smack in the middle of a stri...

Though many factors may be at play such as the poor economy, and 2010 being the first of a five year commitment on the part of Ironman to St. George, the fact is several are hotels, who are members of the association, still have...

Longer Lasting Floppy Disks

Funny Business

Never leave diskettes in the disk drive, as data can leak out of the disk and corrode the inner mechanics of the drive. Diskettes should be rolled up and stored in pencil holders.
Diskettes should not be inserted or removed from the drive while the red light is flashing. Doing so could result in smeared or possibly unreadable text. Occasionally the red light remains flashing in what is known as a "hung" or "hooked" state. If your system is "hooking" you will probably need to insert a few coins before being allowed access to the slot.
Diskettes should be cleaned and waxed once a week. Microscopic metal particles can be removed by waving a powerfu...

Looking for Lease Space?
Use an agent to save time and money

What is a “triple-net (NNN)?” Is it extra protection for a nervous tight-rope walker? How about an estoppel certificate, eminent domain, or even ad valorem? With terminologies like this it is no wonder that many people find navigating the world of real estate to be confusing and down right intimidating.

I remember a trip I took to visit family in San Diego, CA. It was a sunny day and there was much that we wanted to see, so we decided to take a tour on the Old Towne Trolley.

This service takes visitors around, hitting all the hot spots, explaining history, and providing an insider's view of the city (much more than my relatives could have done...

- Prior estimated losses in both Janu...

Lost Wealth Won't Keep 50+ Home Buyers Down for Long
Excerpts from an Article in `Nation's Building News` - May 4th

Reeling from a sizable decline in wealth as a result of the current downturns in housing and the financial markets, members of the baby boom are in a bit of a holding pattern for now, but will gradually make their way back into the housing market, eventually in a big way, according to panelists at NAHB's `Building for Boomers and Beyond 50+ Housing Symposium` held in Philadelphia April 27-29.

Builders at the conference reported that selling an existing home has become a major stumbling block for households who would like to move to an active-adult community either restricted or targeted to 55+ residents. For the most part, however, this segment of the market is performing no better or worse than...

ST GEORGE, UTAH, April, 2009 - Fifth grader Lulu Beltran was used to the long hours as a member of the AAA School Safety Patrol program at Dixie Downs Elementary. It was a typical day at Dixie Downs Elementary as Beltran helped students safely cross the street. She was assisting a little girl to cross the road when she noticed a green car approaching. The driver was talking on his cell phone while drinking from a bottle, paying no attention to the road. When Beltran realized the car was not going to stop, she yelled at the girl to...

SkyWest Airlines announced recently the retirement of Lynnita (Lynn) Murphey after 20 years with the Company, all of which were spent in St. George. Lynn began her SkyWest career as a reservations agent and, most recently, has spent the last four years working in the Company's travel department.
“I've loved every minute with SkyWest,” said Lynn. “I'm so proud of this company, the growth it has achieved and the service it provides to so many communities, especially our own.” Originally from Peoria, Illinois, Lynn has been a resident of St. George for nearly 30 years and served in several areas of the community.
“Lynn is one of the most incredible people I know,” said Brandi Honey, Manager of Marketing and People Programs. “She is full of positive energy and creates an enthusiastic atmosphere anywhere she is.
