Volume 7, Issue 21, 2004-11-22 Kaleidoscope Café Does Ribbon Cutting
|
There is a new destination in Southern Utah, the Kaleidoscope Café & Art Gallery. The official Grand Opening was held last Saturday, November 20th, in conjunction with a ribbon cutting ceremony and art show.
Their goal, says Ursula See proud manager of the new store, “is to provide the community with a friendly, eclectic environment where patrons enjoy affordable gourmet food and an artistic environment.”
Kaleidoscope Café is located in the tranquility of Coral Canyon, near the new Harley Davidson store. They offer homemade soups, sandwiches, salads and an extensive beverage menu. You can enjoy a Roast Beef with roasted red bell pepper, a Grilled Vegetarian with avocado, red onions, sharp cheddar and tomatoes splashed with balsamic vinegar, and their famous chicken salad with a fruity twist.
The flavor of all sandwiches can be further enhanced when grilled on their panini grill. If you love greens try their pear salad, prepared while you wait with Asian pears, crumbled Blue Cheese and raspberry vinaigrette. They proudly serve organic and fair-trade Equator Estate Coffees & Teas from San Rafael, California.
Coffees are roasted and shipped within 48 hours to maintain maximum freshness. If coffee is not in your routine try one of their Ghirardelli's Hot Chocolate Specialties such as Butterscotch, English Toffee or Irish Crème. They also feature Big Train Blended drinks, fresh fruit smoothies, Italian sodas and hot apple cider.
The Art Show on display at the grand opening remains on display, and features the works of Tony Melendy , Lisa Huber, Scott Griffin, Martin Sobey, and Pat Riley.
Tony Melendy works with metals, glass and plastics to create sculptures and works of art that are morsels of visual extravagance. His art has been featured in the original Star Trek series, and Tony received the Frank Lloyd Wright Memorial Award and has been exhibited at the World's Fair. His works can be found in the collections of Tony Curtis, Ray Bradbury, Dean Martin, and Twiggy. He has galleries in Scottsdale, Palm Beach, Carmel, La Jolla and Los Angeles.
Lisa Huber is a native Utah artist with an insatiable interest in weathered structures and old vehicles. On display of special interest is a watercolor of the restored early 1920's fire engine of the Cedar City Fire Department.
Scott Griffin graduated from Dixie College and studied the art of mural painting in California. Currently Scott is producing sculptures that are made from stones, hand rolled glass and found pieces of metal and wood. His work can be found at The Museum of Nebraska Art, the homes of Richard Lossee and the Countess Bauer of Austria. His sculpture, “My Old Friend is a Bit of a Fixer-Upper” is a fantastic metaphor inspiring contemplation.
Martin Sobey is a commercial photographer in New York City
Ursula See, who has recently moved to Southern Utah from San Francisco, manages the Kaleidoscope Café. In the Bay Area, Ursula was a District Sales Manager for Odwalla Juice, the largest super premium fresh juice company in the U.S. She gained over six years experience in the health food industry while managing the growth and expansion of Odwalla's largest market.

(not many places to eat in Coral Canyon, yet) Kaleidoscope Café will be the first retail café in the Coral Canyon area. The plan is to open in mid-August this year.
And what might you ask will they serve? The Café is designed as a retail coffee house. “We will provide many healthy and delicious alternatives such as fresh fruit, soups, salads and sandwiches along with our extensive drink menu featuring all organic, free trade espresso and coffee, Italian sodas, Odwalla juices, smoothies and organic teas”, Boasted Ursula with pride. But it's not just about food”, continued Ursula. “Our desire is to be successful by providing a comfortable, playful and relaxing environment for the community to eat, drink, laugh, socialize and philosophize.”
When asked of her objective in business, Ursula said “We obviously need money to live and expand but mostly we wanted to have better control over our quality of life - of course Ursula Jr. has been eyeing the Harley Davidson Shop just around the corner.

Volume 7, Issue 14, 2004-08-16 Kanab's 2004 Western Legends Round-up -- Festive, Film Greats, Movies and Scenery
|
KANAB, UTAH - The entertainment menu of the 2004 version of the Western Legends Round-up offers more selections than a chuck-wagon breakfast, including its proximity to the “mother lode” of America's scenic wonders.
Scheduled for Aug. 24-29, the sixth annual Round-up will relive the movie-making lore of this scenic community of 5,000, often called “Utah's Little Hollywood.”
“There's been more than 200 western films, featuring 200 stars, filmed around here dating to 1924, so surely the Round-up has plenty of attractions to entertain and enlighten visitors,” says Robert Houston, chairman of the citywide festival. “When you combine the Round-up's festivities with all the natural tourist attractions in the area, it makes for a family outing you can't find anyplace else in the world.”
Houston is referring to the fact that Kanab, near the Utah-Arizona border, is 60 miles from Glen Canyon (Lake Powell) National Recreation Area, 70 miles from Bryce Canyon National Park, 80 miles from the Grand Canyon and 40 miles from Zion National Park. That list of vacation attractions is embellished by national monuments, national forests and three state parks within a short drive from the Round-up site.
The Round-up's celebration of western movie lore includes the west's only cowboy poetry rodeo, clogging demonstrations, quick draws and fiddle competitions, arts and crafts exhibits and sales, a wild horse and longhorn cattle parade, an authentic wagon train trek, mountain man displays, western dress-up contests, sidewalk sales, Navajo weavers, western art show, western music and western swing dancing, blacksmith exhibit, a quilt show, daily stage shows, a Dutch oven cook-off and movie set tours.
Also on the docket are the Western Film Festival, featuring the screening of old-time silent and western movies; western movie star and stunt man panel discussion, and a Kane County movie-making lecture.
“Each year we add features and improve the Round-up,” says Houston. “It's all part of our underlying goal that is to promote and preserve our western heritage and culture through poetry, music, stories, education and working displays.'
Brad Hainsworth, long-time area resident, western author, member of the Kanab City Council and of the WLR governing board, says of the city's premier celebration: “The round-up gives people who love the past and the west to experience them through our many attractions such as our western movies and heroes, wagon train rides, cattle drives, toe-tapping' entertainment and fiddle and fast-draw competitions.”
Admission rates range from “free” for the daily street festival to a $20-$25 ticket to the major shows. The 40-mile, 2 ½-day wagon train experience costs $200 (kids under 12 free), including campfire entertainment and meals. Tickets go on sale June 1, 2004.
The entertainment headliners
Ian Tyson, a one-time itinerant logger and rodeo rider who is a pioneer of country-rock music and master of the so-called “new” western music; R. W. Hampton, a working cowboy and singer from New Mexico; Red Steagall, a poet, songwriter, recording artist, TV and move personality who is known for his Texas-style swing dance music and songs and for his “Ride the Brand” entertainment troupe.
Making personal appearances in Kanab for the Round-up where they will be honored for their contributions to western film lore will be: Bruce Boxleitner, western (and other) movie star/TV actor, who starred in “How the West was Won” (1979) that was filmed in the Kanab area;
Robert Horton, western movie legend whose credits include “Pony Solder”, “Apache War Smoke” and “Return of the Texan” (all filmed in 1952). He appeared in numerous TV series and the star in the series “A Man Called Shenandoah” (1965-1966). He also has appeared in several Broadway shows, including “Oklahoma!”, “Carousel”, “Show Boat”, Brigadoon,” Kismet” , “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” and “Death of a Salesman.”
Adrian Booth, long-time western movie actress, who appeared in “Red River Range” (1938) in which she was John Wayne's leading lady. She also has appeared in movies with Buster Keaton, The Tree Stooges, W.C. Fields and William Holden.
Round Up Accolades
The Round-up received accolades from “True West” Magazine, which proclaims it the “Best Western Film Festival” in its “Best of the West in 2003” feature.
During its 2004 session, the Utah State Legislature and Utah Gov. Olene S. Walker lauded the Round-up with a citation that proclaims the event “celebrates the film makers who made films in Kanab's ‘Little Hollywood' and honors them with a Western Film Festival and celebration.”
The region's western movie making history dates to 1924 when the legendary Tom Mix starred in “Deadwood Coach.” Other silver screen classics awash in Kanab's striking scenery, are “Stagecoach” (1939), with John Wayne; “Union Pacific” (1939), with Joel McCrea, Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Preston; “Green Grass of Wyoming” (1948), with Charles Coburn and Burl Ives; “Pony Express” (1953), with Charlton Heston and Rhonda Fleming; “Duel In Diablo” (1966), with James Garner and Sidney Poitier; “The Desperados” (1969), with Vincent Edwards and Jack Palance; “The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing” (1973), with Burt Reynolds; “The Outlaw Josie Wales” (1976), with Clint Eastwood and Chief Dan George; “The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again” (1979), with Tim Conway and Don Knotts; and “How the West was Won” (1979), with Bruce Boxleitner, James Arness, and Eva Marie Saint.
Popular television series with their roots in Kanab include “The Lone Ranger”, “Death Valley Days”, “Have Gun Will Travel”, “Wagon Train”, “F Troop”, “Daniel Boone”, “Grizzley Adams”, “Six Million Dollar Man” and “Bionic Boy”.
Leigh von der Esch, executive director of the Utah Film Commission, says Kanab's annual Western Legends Round-up “Serves as an authentic reminder of the role southern Utah has played - and continues to play - in the nation's motion picture industry.”
She says “Utah's unique landscapes have been the backdrop for more than 600 films and television productions since the 1920s and today movie-making results in more than $100 million a year in movie production dollars being left in the state.”
She adds that “the Utah Film Commission salutes Kanab for annually helping Utah residents and visitors remember and relive our rich film-making heritage by staging the Round-up.”
More information about the Western Legends Round-up is available through the following means: On line at www.westernlegendsroundup.com.

Incentive Period to Expire at Year's End
|
Morris Peacock, managing partner of KempBurdick CPA's & Advisors, stated that despite its reputation for sometimes acting slowly on policy initiatives, the federal government has moved swiftly to change tax laws in order to aid those stricken by disasters in the Gulf Coast. According to Peacock, "One of these tax law changes directly impacts the deductibility of charitable contributions."
Generally, an individual's contributions to a tax-exempt charitable organization are limited to 50 percent of the taxpayer's adjusted gross income (AGI) for the tax year. Any excess amount may be carried over for a period of up to five years. The new law removes the 50 percent limitation for all ...

Volume 8, Issue 22, 2005-12-19 Katy Potter's Christmas
|
Katy has loved singing right from her birth. She has always sung while playing around the house. Katy even began singing with her dad's jazz band at age 8 and has performed with Sam Payne and the Utah Jazz. Now at age 12 she routinely sings at weddings, concerts, and in church.
Katy has trained with Claudine Cooper of Dixie College and is currently studying from Shareen Potter, her opera-trained singing coach and cousin. She also enjoys singing and performing with the Dixie Children's Choir under the direction of Launa Wyson. Katy comes from a long line of musicians in the Potter family.
Last year (2004) Katy told her dad that she wanted to record a Christmas CD and then sell it to family and friends in order to raise money for the local Care and Share in St. George. Katy is a very sensitive girl and wants everyone to be happy, especially during the Christmas Holidays.
A simple CD was recorded on the family key board (it also has a KARAOKE feature, which Katy uses at least an hour everyday) and copies were made to sell. This first CD was called WE CARE! Within 2 weeks Katy had sold over 100 CDs to friends and neighbors. She then took the proceeds and purchased Christmas gifts for a homeless family that was staying at the Dixie Care & Share. It was truly an amazing experience for Katy, not to mention her entire family.
No sooner than Katy had delivered the gifts to the shelter, she told her dad, “Next year we are going to do it right! I want to sell thousands of CDs so we can help more people.” So, with the help of family, friends and some terrific sponsors, this year Katy has recorded WE CARE TOO! This year all the songs on the CD are original arrangements of Katy's favorite Christmas Carols done by her dad, and the recording was done at Aspire Studios (all studio and musician's time was donated).
This year Katy is working to raise money for organizations such as HABITAT FOR HUMANITY on a local and national level. She hopes to get publicity for her efforts through news media outlets so more people can participate in this worth-while cause.
Joining Katy this year is her life-long best friend, Megumi Gass. Meg is gifted violinist who began studying at age 4. Together, these two aspiring musicians hope to bring joy to the world by sharing their incredible talents. And, in the process they want to bring hope to their American brothers and sisters who are less fortunate and are suffering because of the recent natural disasters in the Gulf States.
Katy is looking for sponsors who can help get the word out or offer locations of distribution. Katy's CD can be purchased for $15.95 at the following locations after Dec. 9th. All proceeds will be donated to charities such as Habitat for Humanity and the Dixie Care & Share.

Volume 8, Issue 12, 2005-06-20 KCSG Changes Networks
News Shows Added to Same Local News Coverage.
|
“Television is one of the most competitive businesses there is”, says Ben Spencer, KCSG General Manager. “In order to stay on top you have to keep up with the technology, negotiate with the economy, and produce a product that the viewers will come back to night after night after night”, Spencer added.
Spencer then proceeded to announce that KCSG Television is “saying goodbye” to PAX programs and Welcoming America One Network to Southern Utah.
“Although America One provides us unique programming, we are still an independent station, this means that we control everything that goes on our air. This gives us the advantage over stations tied to network affiliation agreements, by allowing us to be flexible in content and be able to reflect the local community's interests. We feel that KCSG is in no way a replacement to any other station but a refreshing change that adds to people's choice of entertainment and television viewing habits in Southern Utah”, Spencer continued.
Spencer says the America One Networks offers local television watchers something they will not find anywhere else. The commitment to local news about Southern Utah will not change.
In an effort to widen the range of programs hitting the air on KCSG Television, station management will focus on more sports programs from golf to live Canadian Football League games, to motor cars. On the softer side they plan to provide lifestyle programs that focus on the improving your garden, kitchen, and home.
“Our main focus will remain on our local news product - since this is truly what makes KCSG unique”, Spencer concluded.

|
Dan Matheson, General Manager, KCSG Television has announced that KCSG-TV in partnership with the St. George Chamber of Commerce is offering a $100,000 grant for Chamber of Commerce members to help area businesses magnify their marketing dollars. According to Matheson, "It's a grant designed to help the area small businesses extend their marketing effort by making matching marketing grants available to promote goods and services. There is no minimum dollar amount required from you for this grant."
Select public and private small companies with 20 or fewer employees are eligible for this offer. The grant funds may be used in any and all KCSG programming for adverting purposes at any time prior to June 30, 2004. The matching grant may be used for purchasing commercial air time on KCSG, video production or television commercial production. Grant applications are limited to Chamber members or new KCSG customers. The funds are available on first-come, first-served basis. Applications may be obtained by downloading a pdf file from the kcsg.com website or by contacting the Chamber of Commerce offices or picking one up at Chamber functions.
"The overwhelming feedback from our small business research project indicates that marketing and advertising funds are in short supply. By offering these funds to qualifying small businesses, KCSG and the St. George Chamber of Commerce are proud to help amplify the economic development of Washington County.

In a tax emergency, would you be ready? Well—organized records not only help you prepare your business tax return. They also help you answer questions if your return is selected for examination or prepare a response if you are billed for additional tax.
Fortunately, you don't have to keep all tax records around forever. There are laws known as statutes of limitations that impact how long you must keep receipts, canceled checks, and other documents that support an item of income or a deduction on your return.
Generally, for questioning the amount of tax reported or making an assessment of additional tax, the IRS has three years from the date you filed t...

Austin, Texas-based Keller Williams, since its founding in 1983, “has become a major force in the real estate industry in recent years due to its corporate philosophy of working for the agent, instead of the agent working for the company”, says Greg Basso, one of the local franchise's new owners. “By partnering with only the top Realtors in each market, then assisting with industry-leading career training, marketing, and business support, Keller Williams significantly improves the buying and selling process for customers in every price range”, Greg continued.

Volume 7, Issue 14, 2004-08-16 King of Tonga to Visit Utah
|
The king of Tonga will visit Salt Lake City to help dedicate a newly rebuilt Tongan church that was destroyed by fire four years ago.
King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV will be in Salt Lake City July 29 through Aug. 2. The leader of the South Pacific island nation will participate in the dedication of the Tongan United Methodist Church, 2590 S. 1590 West, West Valley City, Saturday, July 31, 10 a.m. The church, then located on Salt Lake City's west side, burned in an arson-caused fire in June 2000. Volunteer efforts and fund-raising by the church's congregation and others enabled land to be purchased and the church to be reconstructed.
Various cultural festivities will also be held following the dedication. In addition to those events, the 86-year-old king will meet with Gov. Olene Walker, Friday, July 30, 11 a.m., at Little America Hotel, 500 S. Main St., Salt Lake City.
Utah has a Tongan population of about 6,600, according to the 2000 Census. That is the second-largest concentration of Tongans in the United States. California has the largest Tongan population.
The Tongan United Methodist Church is arranging King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV's visit with help from the Utah Office of Pacific Islander Affairs in the state's Division of Housing and Community Development. The office was created to inform the governor of issues impacting the Pacific Islander community in Utah. The office also monitors state agencies and their programs and makes recommendations on how they can increase and improve their response to the needs of Pacific Islanders.

Volume 7, Issue 7, 2004-04-12 Kite Festival Makes it Happen
By Don Lyman.
|
It has been an amazing opportunity for me personally to be involved with the Dixie Escalante Kite Festival over the last few years. It's gratifying to see the amount of effort and time that so many are willing to give to the community to bring about these kind of uplifting events. The whole experience has just been fun!
Elementary school children, who have taken more interest in reading, have achieved great things. If for no other reason, just seeing the excitement and motivation that these kids have towards reading and earning their kites, is worth all the effort. And speaking of effort, hundreds of volunteers are involved each year to make this an enjoyable family event.
They are the heart of the kite festival; they make it happen. The many business sponsors deserve our thanks as well. For without their financial support, this could not be the quality event that it is. Those are some mighty fine kites that the kids will be flying! Every year there are more and better kites for them to choose from. Thanks to those businesses that have been so generous. Thanks again to everyone involved!
I hope that you will all come out on April 17th and enjoy the Dixie Escalante Kite Festival. As you can see, listed in this tabloid, there are many new additions to the festival that should draw the interest of kids of all ages. We will have great food, entertainment, rides, games, and kites. There will be kites for sale and a kite-making booth for those of you who would like to make your own. There is plenty to do and see for everyone!

On the Saturday before, the Kiwanis and SUU brought the Utah Showcase and the Harlem Entertainers basketball teams together for a great night of sports action and entertainment. A crowd of about 2,000 enjoyed a fun-filled display of spectacular basketball.
The icing on the cake was that proceeds went toward scholarships for SUU students--$4,000 worth! With one of his...

Volume 10, Issue 33, 2007-10-19 Know the Tax Consequences of Foreclosure
By Brian Tenney
|
ST. GEORGE — Mike Spilker, partner with HintonBurdick CPAs & Advisors suggests that, "As you listen to the debate over the latest turmoil in the real estate market, you may wonder how losing a home in foreclosure proceedings could result in taxable income.’
Unfortunately, unless Congress changes federal tax law, there are two ways. One way is the gain on foreclosure.
‘A foreclosure is treated as a sale,’ Spilker said. ‘When the amount realized on the foreclosure is greater than your basis in the home, the resulting gain is generally subject to tax at capital gains rates. You can have a gain even though you receive no cash.’...

I know the title sounds a little simple but you'd be surprised. Most business owners say, "I know what the objective of my advertising is, it's to make money, to make sales, to generate business."
Well, there are lots of other things you need to decide. Do you want your ads to generate leads, generate sales, build awareness, build an image, get prospects to take an action, move somebody to the next step in the buying process or a combination of these things.
Many business owners assume that everyone who sees their ad will be ready to buy. But it depends on what you're selling and...
