Back Injury Prevention



The most frequent on-the-job injury is low back strains. In Utah, back injuries account for 30 percent of workers compensation claims and nearly 50 percent of claim costs - almost $30 million in payments. Back injury costs in the United States are estimated to be about $100 billion per year. This does not include the costs of damaged equipment and product, or lost productivity.
Most back injuries are preventable. Prevention requires understanding how and why injuries occur, training on and following safe lifting practices, supervision and workplace changes when appropriate.
As amazing as the human back is, it is designed to primarily carry upper body weight. The back is most efficient at this when upper body posture is vertical. As the upper body bends forward at the waist, back muscles must work harder to keep from falling forward.
The back muscles' leverage is about 10 to 1, which is not an efficient ratio. For example, a 20-pound box causes the low back to feel 200 pounds of force and a 50-pound box causes 500 pounds of force: The greater the force on the lower back, the greater the risk for back injury.
When bending over at the waist to lift an object, the back must also lift upper body weight which creates additional low back forces. Most back injuries involve lifting while bending over, lifting an object away from the body, or lifting an object that is too heavy.
Preventing these types of injuries requires reducing the forces on the low back. For example, move a 50-pound box from 20 inches away from the back to 10 inches away. The low back forces drop from 500 pounds to 250 pounds. Moving the box 10 inches closer to the back cuts the low back force by 50 percent and reduces the risk for injury!
To reduce and/or prevent back injuries, follow the eight rules of safe lifting practices:
Keep your back straight.
Keep the load close to your body.
Use your legs to lift. Bend your knees, not your waist.
Don't twist when lifting.
Think about the lift. What will make the lift safe? The greatest cause of back injuries is habit. Most workers lift wrong because they do not consciously think about lifting.
Test the weight of the object to be lifted. Can it be handled safely?
Supervise safe lifting practices to break bad lifting habits.
Use mechanical or ergonomic devices if lifts are frequent. Devices that minimize the number of lifts, the lifting distance and the lifting load weight include conveyors, hoists, forklifts, adjustable pallet lifts and lift assists.

Windows ships with its own backup software. You can find the utility under Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup. It is buried pretty deep, but it can be very useful if you want to protect your files from loss.
Years ago the floppy disk was the typical way to backup documents. The computers of today are often used for processing pictures, music, and many other larger files that do not fit on floppy disks or require hundreds of disks.
Compact Discs also have problems due to their write once nature. But there is a new type of media that can be very useful: compact flash memory. You may be more familiar with this memory as the little USB memory sticks. This type of media can hold the larger files and is faster than floppy disks.
When you plug the memory sticks into your computer, they show up as an additional disk drive with its own letter. This makes it easy to find and use. The Windows backup software also can use this type of memory to store its backups because it shows up as a standard windows disk drive. You also do not need any special software to use these drives.
Perhaps the most useful feature of USB memory sticks is that they are portable and very easy to use on multiple computers. So if you are looking for a way to backup your files and want a convenient, easy to use method, consider the Windows Backup program and Compaq flash memory.

LeeAnne B. Linderman, who oversees Zions Bank's Retail Banking Division, is featured on the magazine's cover in a photograph with seven other industry leaders and ranks No. 23 among the Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking. Diana E. Kirk, responsible for Zions Bank's Private Banking Division, ranks No. 7 among the Top 25 Women to Watch. Bank Sponsors Finance Class in High Schools


SALT LAKE CITY - Zion’s Bank is sponsoring “Financial Peace for the Next Generation” in 102 high schools in the state of Utah. More than 60 percent of Utah's high schools are now implementing the program as supplemental or primary curriculum.

The Utah State Office of Education has approved and adopted the curriculum to assist educators in teaching basic financial concepts to high school students.

Materials have been shipped to Dixie High School and Millcreek High School in St. George. The majority of the sponsored classes will begin this spring.

“To graduate from high school you have to know what an amoeba is but not how to balance your checkbook,” said Dave Ramsey, creator of the program. “After years of listening to parents tell me their financial woes on the radio it made sense to develop a program that would teach teenagers how to avoid their parent's mistakes.”

A study by Robert D. Manning says three out of five students with credit cards max them out during their freshman year of college and nearly three-fourths of students use their student loans to pay for their credit cards.

Beginning with the graduating class of 2008, Utah's high school students are now required to complete the mandatory course called “General Financial Literacy” to be prepared for life's financial decisions. “Financial Peace for the Next Generation” helps supplement this course requirement.

A nationally syndicated radio talk show host and best-selling author, Ramsey created the program to help teach students the financial lessons their parents learned the hard way. The DVD series covers the basics of insurance, investing, saving, retirement planning and college planning, along with the difficulties associated with credit and debt.

Up 42 percent year to date

Utah bankruptcy filings in Utah the first six months of this year were up 42 percent compared to the first six months of 2007, well above the national 30 percent increase recorded in the same time frame, according to a report issued online last week by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah and the American Bankruptcy Institute.

Banks Lower Prime Rate Following Fed Action


Financial institutions across the country lowered their prime rates Tuesday following the Federal Reserve's reduction of the discount rate to 4 percent.

In an announcement Tuesday, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., said it is lowering its prime rate from 7.25 percent to 6.50 percent. Bank of America N.A., Wachovia Corp., Harris N.A. were among others making the same announcement.

The prime rate is the interest rate charged by banks to their most creditworthy customers, generally top business clients.

Barrel Races Scheduled at Regional Park


People often think of barrel racing as a woman's sport. Times have changed! Many organizations, including the Washington County Barrel Racing Association (W.C.B.R.A.), have men competing on a regular basis.
Kyle McGregor, an employee of Quality Excavation, has been on the back of a horse most of his life. He moved back to his home town, St. George, from Florida three years ago. Kyle immediately jumped back on a horse and started barrel racing, which was a new sport for him.
Kyle and his horse CoCo Bueno have won multiple saddles, including "one of five" at a national finals meet, and enough money to feed his horses. He belongs to several clubs and enjoys barrel racing, pole bending and other speed events on horses. He is currently working with a second horse and is hoping she will be faster than the one he is competing on now.
You don't have to be a pro to have fun barrel racing! There are several clubs in the area that you can run with. Kyle is the president of the W.C.B.R.A. which holds nineteen races throughout the year. They also have a ten and under age group. The club feels that this group is the future of rodeo and up coming W.C.B.R.A. members.
All W.C.B.R.A. barrel races are held at the Washington County Fairgrounds; the next two are May 11th and 27th starting a 6:30pm and free for spectators.
This year Kyle estimates that the money and prizes for the year end finals on Oct 22nd and 23rd will be roughly $17,000! When people hear about the large amount of money and prizes to be won they may become apprehensive about coming out to compete. It's not a bad spectator sport either. Kyle expects hundreds of fans to be in attendance at these competions.
Competitor's skills and horses range from beginning to pro and everything in between in this club! Without sponsor such as Butler's, IFA, Jolley's Western Wear, Equine Supply, and many others, W.C.B.R.A. may not have been the success story it has become.

Better Days Ahead For Utah's Economic Growth



According to the Summer 2004 issue of Zions Bank's "Insight -- Economic News of Idaho and the Nation" released today, Utah's economy has returned to its traditional growth mode, following 30 months of the weakest state economic performance since the early 1950s.
"Strong growth of the state's future labor force, lower business costs, and a lower cost of living will pay solid dividends in coming years for the state, its businesses and its residents. Better days are ahead," said Jeff Thredgold, economic consultant to Zions Bank and author of Insight.
The quarterly Insight publication features updates on current and projected economic and financial developments for the state of Utah, the Intermountain region, and the nation. The Summer 2004 issue also examines the role of the Federal Reserve in driving the economy. Following are a few highlights from the "Utah Economic Outlook" section of the Summer 2004 issue:
1) The Utah economy added an estimated 16,300 net new jobs during the most recent 12-month period, the strongest year-over-year gain in four years. The 1.5 percent annual growth pace is expected to give way to growth approaching 2.5 percent (25,000-30,000 net new jobs) in 2005.
2) The state's annual jobless rate averaged 4.5 percent in recent months, a major improvement versus the 6.1 percent and 5.6 percent averages of 2002 and 2003, respectively.
However, the current jobless rate is running one percent higher than the 3.5 percent average between 1996 and 2000. An estimated 55,000 Utahns are now out of work, down nearly 20 percent from the 67,100 residents out of work a year ago.
3) Growth in total Utah personal income is expected to reach or slightly exceed 4.0 percent in 2004, the best performance since 2001.
4) Spending by individuals and businesses rose 9.0 percent in 2004's first quarter when compared to the same quarter in 2003, according to the Utah State Tax Commission.
5) Two major factors will provide greater incentives for employers to expand Utah operations or consider doing business in Utah in coming years: the rapidly expanding labor force and the relatively low cost of "doing business" in the state.

It's All Attitude

One day an expert in time management was speaking to a group of business students and, to drive home a point, used an illustration those students will never forget. As he stood in front of the group of high powered overachievers he said, "Okay, time for a quiz."
Then he pulled out a one gallon, wide mouthed Mason jar and set it on the table in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, "Is this jar full?" Everyone in the class said, "Yes." Then he said, "Really?"
He reached under the table and pulled out a bucket of gravel. Then he dumped some gravel in and shook the jar causing pieces of gravel to work themselves down into the space between the big rocks. Then he asked the group once more, "Is the jar full?" By this time the class was on to him. "Probably not," one of them answered.
"Good!" he replied He reached under the table and brought out a bucket of sand. He started dumping the sand in the jar and it went into all of the spaces left between the rocks and the gravel. Once more he asked the question, "Is this jar full?" "No!" the class shouted. Once again he said, "Good."
Then he grabbed a pitcher of water and began to pour it in until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and asked, "What is the point of this illustration?"
One eager beaver raised his hand and said, "The point is, no matter how full your schedule is, if you try really hard you can always fit some more things in it!" "No," the speaker replied, "that's not the point. The truth this illustration teaches us is: If you don't put the big rocks in first, you'll never get them in at all.
"What are the 'big rocks' in your life? They are your children ... your loved ones ... your education ... your dreams ... a worthy cause ... teaching or mentoring others ... doing things that you love ... time for yourself ... your health ... your significant other.
Remember to put these BIG ROCKS in first or you'll never get them in at all. If you sweat the little stuff (the gravel, the sand) then you'll fill your life with little things you worry about that don't really matter, and you'll never have the real quality time you need to spend on the big, important stuff (the big rocks).
So, tonight, or in the morning, when you are reflecting on this short story, ask yourself this question: What are the 'big rocks' in my life? Then, put those in your jar first.

WASHINGTON - Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) joined with Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) to introduce a major piece of legislation aimed at jump-starting the use of natural-gas vehicles in Utah and elsewhere across the nation.
 
Natural gas is a clean source of fuel, which in most cases is significantly less expensive than gasoline per mile driven, Hatch noted at a press conference.
 
"In 2005, as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, I was able to get the CLEAR Act enacted into law," Hatch said. "That legislation has promoted the purchase of alternative-fuel and hybrid vehicles, alternative-fuel infrastructure and the use of alternative fuels in vehicles.  I have been very pleased with the growth in the use of hybrid-electric vehicles in this country since the passage of the CLEAR Act, but I have been less pleased with the growth in natural gas as a transportation fuel.  I believe strongly an extra push is needed to spur the greater use of natural gas and to get more natural gas vehicles on our roads."

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Bureau of Land Management Utah sold 43 of the 62 offered parcels, totaling 62,059.16 acres of federal land located in Beaver, Carbon, Iron, Sanpete and Sevier Counties at the Utah quarterly oil and gas lease sale conducted last week at the BLM Utah State Office in Salt Lake City.

During the oral auction, BLM received $2,726,509.00 in bonus bids for the federal oil and gas lease rights. In addition to the bonus bids, the sale netted $93,112.50 in rental fees and $6,020.00 in administrative fees, for $2,825,641.50 in total revenues from this lease sale.

The Deseret Morning News is reporting a proposal to build a $300 million pipeline that would carry gasoline and diesel more than 400 miles from northern Utah to Las Vegas with a terminal in Cedar City is before the Bureau of Land Management for public comment.

The 12-inch pipeline would originate in Woods Cross, Utah, at a refinery operated jointly by Holly Corporation, a Texas-based company that processes crude oils, and Sinclair Oil. On Saturday May 29th the Virgin Regional BMX Committee is hosting a race. The races begin at 11:00 A.M. and ‘run' through 12:30 P.M. at the, you guessed it, Virgin Regional BMX Track!
This BMX event is for all ages. Some riders start as young as 2 years old and some are 50 plus years! BMX is a family sport. There are no coaches in BMX. Mom and Dad are pit crew and cheering section and are there to shake your hand when you win and dry your tears when you lose or feel discouraged.
Riders of the same age and skill level (proficiency) race their 20" bicycle or 24" cruiser over a 1500+ foot long dirt track of turns and obstacles. If you like riding your bike around your neighborhood or on a homemade track or jumps, then you'll like this competitive type of racing on a local, state, national and international level.
This type of racing is arguably a lot safer than riding on the street, you have to wear protective gear and your bike must pass a safety inspection. Adding to what sounds like a load of fun, is the fact that it's free; yup . Free!

Boulevard Building for the Future



In 1987 the Boulevard used new technology to build their first off-site warehouse. In 1996 the Boulevard's current Distribution center in the Millcreek Industrial Park was completed. In each case, the new warehouse space was quickly outgrown.
Recently, plans for a larger Distribution Center located in the Gateway Industrial Park were announced, with the goal of completion in the fall of 2005. Boulevard Home Furnishings bought a 28-acre piece of property in Hurricane's Gateway Industrial Park, located off State Route 9, about 2 miles from interstate 15. This new location will allow for future growth for many years.
Marc Wittwer, chief operations officer for the Boulevard, indicated that the new Distribution Center would be built in phases, to keep pace with the company and the area's growth. The first phase will be approximately 120,000 square feet. This will allow for much needed additional warehouse space to keep a deeper stock of products on hand. The construction will begin as soon as plans and building designs have been created and finalized.
This new facility will be the largest in the region for housing, appliances, electronics, furniture and flooring. It will be the hub of distributing all products to serve the Boulevard's locations in St. George & Mesquite, and their future store in Cedar City. In addition, the new facility will be home to the company's repair services for furniture and appliances.
The Boulevard's new Distribution Center will meet the needs of area growth, providing more products, services, and jobs. "Building for the future" has become an appropriate theme this year as the Boulevard celebrates 30 years in business.

The historic saga of George Gershwin's immortal American opera, Porgy and Bess, is brought to the Cox Auditorium with a professional cast, full staging and costumes. As the years go by, this masterpiece of the American musical theater gains in stature and popularity, and it has become a staple in opera houses throughout the world. Porgy and Bess is a highlight of the CCS season.
The initial audience reaction to Porgy and Bess was generally enthusiastic, but most of the critics were lukewarm at best. Only Leonard Liebling of the New York American got it right: he called Porgy and Bess the first authentic American opera. For his part, Gershwin considered the work a labor of love and remained convinced that it would stand the test of time.
How right he was. Porgy and Bess has enjoyed numerous successful productions, none more stimulating and satisfying than the Sherwin M. Goldman / Houston Grand Opera production in 1976. It was the first fully restored operatic version to be presented and won both Broadway's Tony for Best Musical Revival and the Grammy for Best Recording of an Opera.

ST. GEORGE - The Dixie Rotary Bowl Association has announced a national broadcast deal with FANZ-TV Network, a broadcaster specializing in minor league and small college sports programming, to telecast the 2008 Dixie Rotary Bowl game scheduled for early December.

Boyer Takes Chair of Chamber Board of Governors
Youngest chair in SLC chamber history takes reins 23 years after his father


SALT LAKE CITY - Jake Boyer assumes his new position as Chair of the Salt Lake Chamber Board of Governors tomorrow. At 37 years old he is the youngest Chair in the history of the Chamber.

"The Salt Lake Chamber is a unique organization that plays a major role in our state," said Boyer who is also president of The Boyer Company. Braithwaite, Church Inducted In SUU Hall Of Honor



The annual celebration of the beginnings of Southern Utah University took place Friday, March 26‒SUU Founders' Day 2004.
Founders' Day is a time to remember the people who have given of themselves for the advancement of SUU, from those first days more than a hundred years ago, to today. Every Founders' Day, SUU President Steven Bennion inducts individuals who have made significant contributions to the University into the Institution's Hall of Honor. Such contributions are not just financial support, but just as important, to the sharing of knowledge, volunteerism, sponsorships, time, deep, sincere support, and heart.
Two individuals were distinguished this year by being inducted into the SUU Hall of Honor: Alice Braithwaite, former first lady of SUU, and Sterling Church, 30+ year veteran of SUU, who, upon his retirement, was the Vice President of Student Services.
The Founders' Day Tropical Fantasy began with a reception at the Convention Center Lobby of the Sharwan Smith Center on the SUU campus. Dinner was served in the Smith Center's Ballroom. A delightful program was presented featuring the talents of SUU students, the induction of Braithwaite and Church, and also the recognition of Distinguished Service award recipients, Cyndi Gilbert, Larry Lunt, and Gale & Alice Waite. Alice Todd Braithwaite was the First Lady of Southern Utah University for 23 years, during which she brought singular grace, compassion and energy to the position. Braithwaite is known to never settle for “just enough.” Married to former SUU President Royden Braithwaite, Alice threw herself fervently into countless worthy causes and endeavors, while serving the Institution and throughout her life to this day.
Her vitality is evident in the fact that, while First Lady of SUU, she also taught elementary school for 20 years and served with selflessness and stellar on a wide variety of community boards and committees while keeping the home fires burning. Ever one to perpetuate and advance the traditions of higher education, she worked serve students, staff, faculty and alumni.
Her rural youth and service as a student at Jordan High School and Brigham Young University prepared her well for a lifetime of good work. As Dean of Women at Weber State University, she was respected and well-liked for her judiciousness, discernment and empathy. In Cedar City, her tireless labors to improve healthcare were served well when she served as chair of the Valley View Medical Center Board for 13 years.
It is for her intelligence and wit; knowledge and wisdom; her charm and spirit; and for her service and commitment to SUU and the community that the Institution is delighted to induct Alice Braithwaite into the SUU Hall of Honor this Founders' Day.

Sterling R. Church served for 30+ years as the chief student services officer at Southern Utah University. Under the leadership of four different presidents, Church worked closely with student leaders and student services staff members to ensure students were given the help and encouragement necessary to succeed on campus and in life.
With a personal mission of continually reminding people that students come first and that they were the reason why the campus existed, Church was an advocate of student involvement in campus decisions. He is known to frequently quote the statement that, “People support that which they help create.”
Another prominent element of his philosophy is his belief that students benefit greatly by being involved in service learning opportunities in addition to the classroom. The completion of the Sharwan Smith Student Center was a realization of a dream and the efforts of Dr. Church, along with numerous colleagues and students. Church first came to the then-College of Southern Utah campus as a freshman in 1960 after graduating from Delta High School.
He graduated from CSU in 1964 with a degree in education and taught school in Springville, Utah, before attending Arizona State University where he received a Master of Arts degree in counseling in 1966. He then returned to Cedar City to become the Director of Student Activities and a counselor in the Counseling Center at his alma mater. After a stint away to obtain his doctorate and working at BYU, he returned to SUU (then- Southern Utah State College) as the Dean of Students and an Associate Professor of Education and Psychology.
Today, even, after being “officially” retired, Church is still serving SUU on a voluntary basis as a special assistant to President Bennion. Sterling Church is a legacy of SUU who has made an impact on hundreds of lives. Students and co-workers love and respect him for his intelligence and gentleness.

Branding - Who Needs It?

In the old west cattlemen used a branding iron to ensure lost cattle would be returned to their rightful owner. Today businessmen use brands to attract consumers to their products. Branding is an age-old tradition that has been passed down and has taken on a whole new meaning today. Just as an entrepreneur with some land and a little capitol can start a ranch, anyone with a good idea and some investors can create products and services and bring them to market. Unfortunately, a good idea combined with good financing does not always mean the consumer will think it's good.
We often think of branding as something only the big guys do. We're all very familiar with the brands that we trust. Most of us recognize the soap we use, the jeans we like, the ketchup we purchase and even the actors we enjoy watching on the big screen. It sounds silly but we don't buy things we don't like. Products that are not easily recognized are much harder to market, not generally accepted and, similar to unbranded cattle, much harder to find.
Have you ever wondered why musicians remake old hit songs? They want another hit, right? Actually what they are doing is repackaging an old brand. If the brand is familiar but looks or sounds new then we're much more likely to accept it and even purchase it. We all crave things familiar to us. You've heard the phrase “birds of a feather flock together.” We like to be familiar with our surroundings and we want to be confident in our choices. The bottom line is we buy what we trust.
Branding applies to anyone in business. Small business owners face a challenge. They have to develop trust and familiarity without deep pockets. I have some suggestions for the small business owner. First of all, do you currently have a brand? What is it? Why do people buy your product or service now? What is it about you and your business that makes people loyal to you? I suggest you ask them.
When they call you or stop into your place of business ask them why they stopped in or called. When they answer, listen and take some notes. Assign the person who fields your calls to ask a couple of specific questions and ask that person to log the answers. I guarantee you'll hear some of the same comments repeated. When you find a common thread in your notes then you're beginning to find your brand. What you hear may not be your perception of your product or service but that doesn't matter. What your clients and customers think is their perception and ultimately your brand. If you like what you hear then market that brand until the cows come home.

What is McDonald's without the "Golden Arches" or Nike without their "swoosh?" Perhaps just another fast food stop or another sporting goods store. What would happen if another restaurant created a sign using the arches? Conceivably, there would be some confusion, but more than that, ©McDonalds would no longer be branded by their yellow arch.
Creating a sign is like giving a company a personality or identity. As fun as this can be, one can feel both cautious and comforted in knowing that these types of frauds are being protected against.
Governments protect our signs through constitutional rights and regulate them through zoning codes. Copyrights, Patents, and Trademarks provide both rights and regulations.
Brainstorming for what to show the public about a company can be problematic, that's understandable. These protections and regulations can help to put your mind at ease. Once you come up with your idea, and get it protected within 3 months of being exposed to the public, it is safe from others using it. The constitution gives legal protection to inventors, authors and creators. In fact, patent and copyright laws have been in existence since 1790.
Aside from the normal copyright, it is possible to obtain a patent on structural elements of a sign such as the materials, components or frame. Further, designs, symbols, words, phrases, or a combination of the above can be trademarked or service-marked. These distinguish the source of the goods or service from others provided.
The best way to make use of the legal protections we have through copyrights, patents and trademarks is to find an original branding through a saying, logo, or graphic; make sure that it fits the company, and use it on all the signs. The end result just may be the next "Golden Arch," or "swoosh." Put it out for everyone who frequently passes by to see and personally associate with.

BRIAN HEAD - A new $6.5 million ski bridge allows skiers here to cross over state Route 143 at at Brian Head resort without having to remove their skis or catch a shuttle bus.

Annual pass fee would jump 67 percent

BRYCE CANYON, Utah - Bryce Canyon National Park is proposing to increase entrance fees in 2007. The increased revenues would pay for expenses related to transportation and the operation of the park's shuttle bus system.

The spring and fall seasons are becoming busier each year, escalating traffic into the park. By increasing funds available for the transportation system, park management intends to increase the shuttle service. In 2006, the shuttle operated from May 26 through September 10.

One investment “rule of thumb” that has traditionally developed is smaller investors are usually late to the game…and thus expose themselves to higher levels of risk when a market bubble leaks, bleeds, or bursts. Such a time could easily be approaching in regard to the purchase or continuing ownership of bonds.

Tens of thousands of smaller investors have grown frustrated with the dismal overall performance of most stocks (also known as equities) during the past decade. Many of these investors in the past would have simply shifted some of their investment funds to financial institution savings accounts and certificates of deposit.

Many investors like the ability to sleep at night, knowing that deposits of up to $250,000 are guaranteed by the FDIC. Most recognize that while interest rates are extremely low, inflation pressures are also historically low.

For other investors, the low interest rate on such savings accounts and CDs has led them to seek higher returns. Bonds…especially U.S. Treasury notes and bonds…have been extremely popular, whether owned as individual securities or as part of a bond fund.

The Investment Company Institute reports that from January 2008 through June 2010, outflows from stock mutual funds totaled $232 billion. During the same time period, bond funds saw an enormous $559 billion inflow (The Wall Street Journal).

Building Youth through 18 Years of the Dixie Junior Livestock Show



The Dixie Junior Livestock Show has grown from 25 kids in 1987 to 304 4-H and FFA participants today. What has turned this small-time show into a big-time educational program? Eighteen years ago, small groups of business owners and ranchers dreamed of providing an educational program that would teach animal husbandry and enhance youths' life skills.
From that time on, the livestock show has grown and evolved to meet the challenges and needs of youth today. With changing demographics, the show has been an asset in teaching youth, and through them their families, the livestock industry. With only approximately 40% of the participating youth coming from families now active in agriculture, the show has opened the eyes of many about an important section of our local economy.
The show brings youth and adults from all walks of life including: politicians, business owners, city kids, and of course, ranchers. Last year, over 225 businesses and private individuals participated in supporting the show. For those who understand the show, it isn't about the tax write-off or the publicity. It's about making an investment in the future of our youth.
The intent of the Dixie Junior Livestock Program is to help develop our youths= character and life skills through the care and training of animals. From this experience, youth can learn responsibility, money management, service, animal husbandry, a good work ethic, and much more. Youth spend many months preparing for the show. They spend hours caring for and training their animals. Families have found this to be a great experience, and oftentimes, build stronger relationships and memories from the time spent preparing for the show.
This year, we would encourage you to bring your families and come see the show. The event will be held out at the County Fairgrounds, April 22nd - 24th. This is an incredible opportunity to introduce your children to livestock and be surrounded in an environment where youth mentor other youth and families play together.

BULLFROG, UTAH - In an effort to comply with a UDOT request to reduce operating costs, ARAMARK Parks and Destinations will discontinue operating the Charles Hall ferry for the winter season from November 1st through March 31st.

The contracted service provides a 3.1-mile transportation link over a portion of Lake Powell connecting Bullfrog Marina to Halls Crossing. The connection, on state Route 276, provides an alternative tourist loop to S.R. 95 between Hanksville and Blanding.

Business Groups Challenge Sanctions Law


PHOENIX - Two business groups have filed a federal lawsuit to overturn a new Arizona law that punishes employers caught hiring illegal immigrants.

The Arizona Contractors Association and Arizona Employers for Immigration Reform filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for Arizona.

The suit says the law violates due process, federal commerce clauses and separation of powers. Other business groups opposed to the sanctions bill are expected to join the lawsuit.

A new survey shows that few small business owners believe an economic recovery is coming soon.

Arizona punishes those who hire illegals

PHOENIX - Two-thirds of Arizona small businesses surveyed recently said they are not affected by the new state law punishing employers that knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

Sixty-five percent of the small businesses polled by O'Neil Associates, Silver State Bank and the Arizona Small Business Association said Arizona's sanctions law had no impact on them.

The “What's an Entrepreneur?” Series


Did you know that the U.S. standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches? Isn't that an exceedingly odd number? So why is it that dimension? Well because that's the way they built the railroads in England, and the English expatriates built the U.S. Railroads.
So why did the English build them like that? Because the very first rail lines that were built were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used. Why did "they" use that gauge then?
Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing. Okay! Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.
So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (and England) for their legions. The roads have been used ever since. And the ruts in the roads?
Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing.
So the United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot, pulled of course, by horses. Imperial Roman army chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the width of two war horses.
Now the twist to the story; when you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory at Utah.
The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site.
The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses.
So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse.

Struggling East Valley Tribune may have found a buyer, according to a story posted last Friday on its Web site


PHOENIX, AZ - The story quoted EVT Publisher Julie Moreno, who said parent company Freedom Communications Inc. received a letter of intent to purchase the paper and keep it and its Web site operating. Moreno has caught criticism in the past few weeks since bankruptcy filings showed she earned hefty bonuses while the paper lost millions and teetered on collapse.

On Nov. 2, the Phoenix Business Journal cited numerous sources that said Moreno had told Tribune staffers the Mesa paper would shut down because Freedom could not find a buyer for it.

Buys, Molen And Leavitt--Honorary Degree Recipients



The 2004 Commencement Exercises for Southern Utah University took place on Saturday, May 8, at which 1,064associate's, bachelors and master's degrees were conferred upon undergraduate and graduate students, and honorary degrees were given to three individuals who have made valuable, and invaluable, contributions to the Institution.
The three 2004 honorary degree recipients were Saundra Buys, (MD from Salt Lake City) Gerald Molen (accomplished Hollywood film producer) and Michael Leavitt (Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).
Saundra Buys, MD, is the co-director of the Family Cancer Assessment Clinic at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, as well as the Medical Director of the High Risk Breast Cancer Clinic. She also is a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah's School of Medicine. She has been caring for patients with all types of cancer since 1982, however, she specializes in treating breast cancer.
Buys is the principal investigator on two large studies funded by the National Cancer Institute. The first--the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, Ovarian (PLCO) Screening Trial--is a nationwide study to determine the effectiveness of screening for these types of cancer. The second study--the Cooperative Family Registry for Breast Cancer Studies*is based in six international sites and is studying some of the genetic causes of breast cancer.
Buys received her MD from Tufts University in Boston. She completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Utah. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Utah in 1984, she completed a clinical and research fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
Beyond her many scientific achievements, Dr. Buys is a wonderful medical role model who blends the latest knowledge and treatments with a caring and compassionate heart. Her patients readily salute her for the extraordinary care they receive from this gifted physician. Buys is a native of Cedar City where she spent the first 12 years of her life.
The blood of SUU runs strong through her veins; she is a granddaughter of D.L. Sargent, longtime and beloved professor emeritus of biology at SUU. And, her other grandfather, J. Howard Maughn, served as the director (president) of SUU (then-called B ranch Agricultural College) from 1922-29. Buys and her husband, Joseph, reside with their two children in Salt Lake City.
Gerald R. Molen is an Academy Award-winning producer who has distinguished himself in the motion picture industry during a career spanning nearly half a century. His Academy Award was for the highly-acclaimed Schindler's List in 1993, when he partnered with Steven Spielberg and Banko Lustig.
In addition to Schindler's List, his credits as producer include Hook (1991), Jurassic Park (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), The Other Side of Heaven (2001), Minority Report and The Legend of Johnny Lingo (2002). His work as Executive Producer is even more extensive and includes: Twister, The Trigger Effect, Casper, Little Giants, The Little Rascals, The Flintstones, A Far Off Place, Days of Thunder, Bright Lights-Big City. He was also Co-Producer on Rain Man and Associate Producer on Batteries Not Included.
Mr. Molen was the Unit Production Manager on The Postman Always Rings Twice, Let's Spend the Night Together, Tootsie, A Soldier's Story and The Color Purple. Molen's accomplishments in Hollywood are well recognized by both his peers and the media. Some of his other accolades include: a Golden Globe Award, British Academy Award, Crystal Heart Award, Peoples Choice Award, Lifetime Achievement from Chapman University, Darryl F. Zanuck Motion Picture Producer of the Year Award, and the Best Picture of the Year award from the New York Film Critics.
He serves organizations like Utah Shakespearean Festival's Board of Governors, McLaughlin Research Institute, the Directors Guild of America, Screen Actors Guild and the Producers Guild of America to name a few. Mr. Molen is a regular lecturer on the topic of the Holocaust and is very proud to be involved with the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, an organization dedicated to the documentation and preservation of the testimonies of survivors of the Holocaust and implemented, in part, as a result of Schindler's List.

Michael Leavitt--Born and raised in Cedar City, Michael O. Leavitt is indeed a son of southern Utah, and just as much, a son of SUU, as he earned his bachelor's degree from then-Southern Utah State College (SUSC) in economics and business in 1978. Nineteen years later, SUU was happy to bestow upon Leavitt, an honorary doctorate degree of Humanities during the 1997 Commencement ceremony.
And although his residential address has changed dramatically in the last few months*from Salt Lake City to Washington, D.C.--Leavitt remains an ongoing and enthusiastic supporter of SUU and its programs, making frequent visits to campus to endorse and participate in events like the Utah Summer Games, the Utah Shakespearean Festival and the Utah Rural Economic Summit. Last November, Leavitt was sworn in as the 10th Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Prior to leading the Agency, he served as Utah's 14th governor for nearly 11 years. SUU appreciated and benefited from Leavitt's causes as a state leader, including his drive to create better schools and empower states. Armored with foresight in planning for future development, Leavitt took advantage of the tools of advanced technology in programs like, "21st Century Communities," "Envision Utah," and "Utah: Where Ideas Connect."
As governor, he proved to be a national leader on homeland security, welfare reform and environmental management. Six times during his gubernatorial administration, independent public policy analysts ranked Utah among the best-managed states in the nation. Leavitt led Utah through the preparation for and days of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City which were recognized as the most environmentally-sensitive Games ever.
Now, as a thoughtful leader on national environmental management, Leavitt implements his Enlibra philosophy. Enlibra, derived from Latin roots meaning to move toward balance, operates on the basis of eight principles which form the prism through which Leavitt conducts his management of the EPA.
Leavitt has maintained three goals throughout his public service: to leave things better than he found them; to plant seeds for the next generation; and to give it all he has. Michael and his wife, Jackie, (also an alum of SUU), are the parents of five children.
