KANAB - Cowboy Ted Hallisey's Foundation for Kids has partnered with Glazier's Food Town again this year to sponsor the Give Cancer the Boot campaign. The fund-raiser will run through New Year's Eve and will help fund a fitness program for Kanab Elementary School.

Residents and visitors can purchase a Give Cancer the Boot card for one dollar and honor the name of a loved one who is fighting Cancer or has lost a battle with Cancer. You can also place your own name on the card as one who wants to fight Cancer. Cowboy Ted's Foundation for Kids is a recognized IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Proceeds from this year's program will go toward funding a new fitness program designed by Cowboy Ted, which will be presented to Kanab Elementary School. Mrs. Glazier's 1st grade class helped Cowboy Ted test the program during a fitness day activity in Oct.

The fitness program is designed to get kids physically active for at least 45 minutes of the 60 minutes recommended by the Surgeon General and other health agencies. Cowboy Ted's programs for kids are designed to address a number of topics related to healthy kids including childhood obesity, nutrition tips and proper portion sizes along with the encouragement for kids to stay physically active throughout their lives.

The longtime educator developed the Cowboy in a Box fitness program for kids after being asked to develop a fitness program by a number of schools across the country. The fitness program is true to its name with all of the equipment for kids to enjoy a 30-60 minute physical education experience "cowboy style" and all included in one box.

"The Cowboy In a Box fitness program is a comprehensive physical activity program that features a circuit of 8-cowboy-type activities. The program is designed with a balance of both fine motor skill and gross motor skill development activities for kids," reported Hallisey. The program is designed for basic school fitness programs and doesn't require a teacher with a background in PE. Cowboy in a Box will be available to the public in the Spring.

Cowboy Ted holds a Master of Education degree in Health, Physical Education & Recreation and has taught collegiate and youth level PE courses. He has hosted school assemblies and visited with over 175.000 kids across the country and has a goal of having a positive impact on one million kids before he hangs up his cowboy hat.

Hallisey is a current member of the National Association of Local Boards of Health's Chronic Disease and Tobacco Prevention committee and served two terms on the Board of Directors for the Southwest Utah Public Health Department.
